Set on the East coast of Africa Kenya borders the Indian Ocean and five countries, Somalia, Ethiopia, South Sudan, Uganda, and Tanzania. Kenya is one of the largest economies in Sub-Saharan Africa with 54 million people making it the 32nd most populous nation in the world.

The country's main exports are tea and coffee, as well as fish and horticulture products. Kenya has one of the most diverse wildlife populations in the world, with the number of large mammals being among the highest in Africa, and has over 50 national parks, 22 national parks and 28 national reserves.

One of Kenya's most famous people is Wangari Maathai, she made history as the first African woman to be awarded with the Nobel Peace Prize in 2004 for her contribution to sustainable development. She was also the first female scholar from East and Central Africa to take a doctorate (in biology), and the first female professor ever in her home country of Kenya.

Kenya is known for producing the best long-distance runners in the world.

"There are 17 American men in history who have run under 2:10 in the marathon, there were 32 Kalenjin who did it in October of 2011," says David Epstein, a former senior writer at Sports Illustrated and author of the new book The Sports Gene

Internationally, Kalenjins and the Nandis (An ethnic group, that makes up 10% of the population) runners have won close to 73% of all Kenyan gold and silver medals at major international running competitions, they hail from the Kenyan Rift Valley.
