Inspecting China Exports
Overview
China is a global leader in terms of exports and has been the world’s largest exporter since 2009, surpassing the United States. If you have ever imported something from China one or all of the following should sound familiar- Shenzhen, Shantou, Zhuhai, and Xiamen. These Special Economic Zones developed because of their coastal locations and are considered the main driving force of China’s climb to the top spot.
These Special Economic Zones (SEZs) were established in 1979 and coincided with the People’s Bank of China’s separation from the Ministry of Finance. This was all introduced by Deng Xiaoping the leader of the Communist Party, and one of the first to visit the western world. He based the new tax system on Taiwan, South Korea, and Singapore. This tax system had exceptions worked in for the specific Economic Zones – this combined with business incentives attracted foreign investors and infrastructure.
These Special Economic Zones (SEZs) were the catalyst and building blocks for the country to open up and start exporting to the tune of $3.36 trillion worth of goods in 2021. With $577.13 Billion going to America, it could be safe to assume that some of those exports landed on Amazon’s website pages. North America was Amazon’s biggest operations segment, accumulating over $279 billion U.S. dollars in net sales during the year 2021.
Products to Amazon
Low wages for factory workers allowed China to become the workshop of the world, attracting international companies, this in turn brought the intellectual property into their manufacturing market. Lax laws enforcing intellectual property, allowed China to make most of the demand for copies of products with sub-par quality and inferior materials. These manufacturing practices still rear their heads every now and then.
With Amazon being one of the main resellers for China exports, research has suggested that up to 90% of all products sold on the online retailer’s website are manufactured in China. The quality and authenticity of products are of continuous concern for Amazon Resellers. You don’t want to import goods to get them seized at customs or worse of such inferior quality that you lose your ratings.
